I heard someone recently say, “do what makes you happy.”
It’s not a bad phrase, I like to write because it makes me happy. I like to make music because it makes me happy. I like to take my dog for a walk because it makes me happy. It just so happens that those things don’t cause sadness for those around me because they don’t infringe upon the happiness of other people.
Now, none of the things that make me happy messes with another person’s happiness. What happens when it does? Is it then enough to say, “do what makes you happy”?
I would say there are people out there who can be mean and do things that hurt others because it makes them happy.
(although, I am always skeptical when a person can find true happiness while being mean)
So instead of looking at that phrase, “do what makes you happy”, I find myself thinking about the importance I place on making myself happy. I also spend time thinking about my place in the world more than I do the things that make me personally happy.
Happiness tends to negatively collide with another person’s happiness when it is self-centered. I believe if we come to an understanding of what makes the universe happy, we can begin to find our place in that... and feel a new kind of happiness knowing that everything is working together for the greater good.
I am less depressed when I think this way because then my happiness doesn’t come and go based on whether the stars are aligning for me personally. Instead of suffering disappointments when things don’t go my way, I pivot on the thought that I am not the only one affected by circumstance.

This is why being kind to others has brought me more happiness than simply looking out for me. There is great joy in being able to sit in the middle of a group, community or even the world and universe which is experiencing balance. Even if my personal world is seemingly going very well, you can’t help but feel the negative vibrations of everything that’s around you and have that affect you negatively. Your bank account maybe high, your career may be going well, your relationship might be awesome, your health might be stellar and yet if you feel a storm brewing peripherally, there is a good chance that you will be impacted. It is so vital, now more than ever, to extend compassion, kindness and gentleness to everyone and everything that we come into contact with to ensure that the balance around us is not perfected because of us but it is not damaged because of us either.
I hope that on this international day of happiness, that you will reflect on the happiness and the well-being of the people, the animals and our planet so that you may also experience the happiness that comes when things are in balance. I believe this is a certain kind of happiness very few people will attain but it is within all of our grasp.
I believe there is a difference between happiness and joy and very few experience elation. I will save that for another day!
Much love, kindness, compassion and gentleness to you this first day of spring,
Karen
