I heard about a guy who was so afraid to fly after 9/11, that he would take a barge to Europe. It took about 18 days to get there, but then he was safe and sound.
He wasn’t guaranteed to get there unharmed. Statistically, I didn’t even look up which one is safer. I do know this. He has no clue what the weather will be doing even if the weatherman tells him.
A storm can smack a brand new jet out of the sky just like a hurricane can capsize a boat. Know what they both have in common?

Every day, we are faced with choices and challenges. You can have a destination planned and something bigger than you stops you or sidetracks you. I actually don’t believe that inspirational message that says “you can do anything you set your mind to”. Know why? Because it ignores all those people who, despite trying their very best, simply didn’t get there. It is like telling my Mom she wouldn’t have died of cancer had she just set her mind to it.
Cancer is a force like a hurricane. It beat her. If you had the good fortune of getting past cancer, I am proud of you but to say you “beat it” kind of demeans all the millions of people who fought really hard and died. Of course, my intention is not to demean anyone.
Maybe certain choices you made coincided with the types of cancer you had. Maybe timing was on your side. Maybe God wasn’t done with you yet. Whatever the case, cancer is ugly and is a moving storm.
This guy going overseas had good timing to not hit a storm on those 18 days, but was there a bad one the day before he left? Days after? It really is just good fortune and the surrounding circumstances of that day. Maybe God wasn’t done with him either. Who knows?
I just think what I am trying to say is that you simply have to make the best choices based on the information in front of you and try to cross all the Ts and dot the Is.
Simply put, sometimes:

Shit happened to me this week. I had a full hysterectomy booked for Thursday, it was successful and then I got hit with strep throat when I got home. Strep isn’t quite a hurricane, but I couldn’t stop it. IT SHOWED UP. Now, I can kick its ass by resting, take my meds, my honey, my tea and stay positive. It is just that the surgery recovery time I had booked was like flying to Europe and now I am taking a long barge to get there. My goal remains the same: get healthy!
You simply don’t know what life will throw at you and you can’t allow it to take you off your game. We have road bumps and forks on the road. Sometimes the flight is longer than we thought.
I can definitely see how people who suffer from depression have chronic illness. I have had that dark cloud pass over where I considered just following it instead of letting it pass.
You gotta keep the focus and don’t beat yourself up when your initial choice was met with storms or circumstance.
Maybe by being on this boat overseas instead of the jet, I will see someone new, have a fresh set of eyes or even learn a new language. We need to stay open to it.

I wasn’t born with patience, that is for sure. I want to RUN!
I will keep my eye on the end goal of health and try to do my best to not join the dark clouds passing by.
More than that, I am not going to torture myself by wondering what could have been done differently.
Hope you will do the same!.
