Have you heard parents of children on the spectrum say, "We don't want your sympathy, we just want sleep"? It is because being the parent of an 'ausome kid' means you have the most unpredictable sleep patterns that can be compared to soldiers sleeping with one eye open during war. I always wished these people could afford a night-nanny.
What many people don't think about is that anyone who is a night owl operates differently. The 3 am insomnia affects many of us and I have written many things at that hour. It isn't my first choice, but you gotta make something of the time or you just slump into a dark depression and beat yourself up over how messed up your life is.
In the 'Idiot Savant' story, Ian almost never sleeps. He seems to find night time pretty comfortable as he doesn't have to contend with the daily annoyances. It is also when the critters come out as they feel like the darkness provides a clean palette for their playtime.
I feel like the Earth is closer to 'normal' at night. The day tends to highlight what we have done to our world and gives visibility to the monsters and machinery of destruction.
Night critters have always fascinated me as they run on different abilities. Mice, rabbits, owls and other amazing nocturnals can move effortlessly to gather food all under the peacefulness of the stars. They also have some really cool opportunities to carve out their home and their pattern. Clarity seems to happen better in the darkness.
For Ian and other kids like him, his night time patterns are comfortable for him...peaceful for his spirit and he can be with the creatures he can most relate to. We shouldn't be quick to judge this as disruptive, rather, they are working on a different cycle or shift. Many children only get upset when sleep is forced on them.
Just like many miles under the sea is a different world, so is night time for many of us. Society has taught us that we are outcasts if we don't follow the 9 to 5 grind. We then tell ourselves we are losers.
In this story, you are going to see how perfect night time is for Ian to hook up with some like-minded spirits and accomplish great things...even if only in his mind for his own amusement.
I am excited to share this monster BLACKGUARD animated video with you all on May the 30th!
Much respect to my co-producer, Frank Gryner for his amazing animation skills!
Now go get some SLEEP!
